The role: We are looking to appoint an adjudicator to make regulatory decisions for us. You will exercise decision-making powers relating to a broad range of work delegated to SRA adjudicators. You must be either: a solicitor, barrister, chartered legal executive or have the equivalent legal professional status, with an entitlement to practise. You will have significant experience in an environment where high-level decision-making is required. This role needs someone who can effectively reach reasoned and accurate decisions quickly, and following a detailed analysis of complex, technical, and often protracted information and evidence. A large part of the role will be to act as panel adviser to adjudication panels, providing legal and technical support to ensure decisions comply with the law, our rules, regulations and guidance.

To use your rights of audience in the higher courts (High Court, Crown Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court) you must meet standards set by the SRA. You must also pass a rights of audience course.
These will be tested throughout the process. practising solicitor, legal executive, barrister or equivalent legal qualification with an entitlement to practise decision making: demonstrable ability to conduct effective evidence-based decision making, bringing independence of mind and making sound judgments through: weighing facts and evidence, analysing and critically evaluating large volumes of complex information and identifying key issues, within tight deadlines and working on own initiative effective interpersonal skills: able to gain respect and maintain rapport through effective communication and influencing skills.

Any RSAs require admissions by the solicitor or firm of breaches of rules or principles, in return for a level of sanction agreed with the SRA. Given the need for admissions – often at an early stage – negotiations take place without prejudice. Either side can propose an RSA at any time in the investigation and prosecution process. They are generally entered into before a case has been referred to the SDT. Significantly, where the matter would otherwise be referred to the SDT due to the SRA's view of the severity of sanction required, RSAs have to be approved by the SDT before they take effect. The SDT can refuse to approve them or require changes to the terms before it does so. It is possible to appeal against any internal SRA decisions, findings and sanctions. The first stage of appeal is to an SRA adjudicator or adjudication panel, depending on which body within the SRA made the first decision. Any further appeal is to the SDT. There is no right of appeal against the authorisation of your case being referred to the SDT.
